During the Euroregional Residency for Scriptwriters, professionals and residents of the programme talked to us about creating, innovating and contributing to transform the world in which we live. Some of their ideas are presented below.
Shandra Martínez from Recreakult and Garbiñe Ortega from Dirdira Lab are two of the professionals who contributed to the training of the Euroregional residents during their stay in the Basque Country. Their projects share a common vision: innovation in the audiovisual sector is based on sustainability and the reinvention of creative processes.
Shandra highlights how innovation today is linked to sustainability: “Today, innovation means addressing both sustainable storytelling within scripts and sustainability in audiovisual production. Sustainability is a central part of the creative processes and the search for solutions to integrate materials, as well as artisan and digital techniques into the projects. The circular economy applied to artistic creation encompasses eco-conception, eco-design and re-use in practice”.
Garbiñe extends the outlook, pointing out that innovation lies not only in the stories we tell, but in how we tell them: “Innovation can be applied at many different levels, not only in the stories and the languages used to tell them, but also in the ways of doing. Production modes and collaboration also need to be rethought to provoke a shift in thinking and therefore not only does new vocabulary emerge to create new worlds, but also new ways of being, thinking, creating and collaborating”.
Laura Ibáñez (Basque Country), Esther Vital (Navarra) and Marion Moreau (New Aquitaine) are the three residents participating in the Euroregional Residency for Scriptwriters. Their animation projects differ in format, content and language, but they share the same approach: creativity is the driving force for collective change.
For Laura, creativity in her life “…is a driving force and a way of existing. It is what enables us to think freely and develop fully”.
Esther underlines its transformative value in complex social contexts: “Creativity is an essential characteristic of people that helps us transform the world in which we live and provide solutions through key channels, such as culture and art. It brings us great value in complex contexts and helps us to think that another world is possible”.
Marion links it to a fundamental human need: “As an artist, creativity is a way of life and an essential competence for entrepreneurship. In the pyramid of human needs, in addition to breathing, eating, sleeping… we also need to play and create in order to develop as people. Because a society that does not see this value, or does not believe it exists, is a sick society”.
